Manmohan Singh likely to turn down Pakistan invite to Kartarpur – Times of India


ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI: Former PM Manmohan Singh is unlikely to accept Pakistan’s invitation to attend the inauguration of the Kartarpur Corridor on the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak.
Pakistan announced on Monday that it has decided to invite Singh. In a video statement , Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said his country has decided to invite Singh after consultations with all stakeholders. “We have decided after consultation that we want to invite former Indian PM Manmohan Singh to the Kartarpur Corridor inauguration. Sikhism is Singh’s religion and he is a representative of the Sikh community,” Qureshi said.
“The Kartarpur Corridor opening is a special occasion and Pakistan wants the former Indian PM to be a part of the historic moment,” he said, adding that Islamabad will also se-nd a formal invitation to Singh. Singh’s office, however, confirmed to TOI that it had received no invite, nor had any intimation of it, and said it could not comment on media conjecture.
