India pacers provided early advantage on the third morning with two quick wickets and then Ravichandran Ashwin removed Quinton de Kock just before lunch as South Africa’s struggle continued in the first session on Day 3 of the Pune Test. Resuming on their overnight total of 36/3, South Africa reached 136/6 at the break. The Proteas got off to a troubled start early as they lost night-watchman Anrich Nortje (3) and Theunis de Bruyn (30) inside the first 30 minutes. Skipper Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock then tried to steady the Proteas ship with a 75-run sixth wicket stand but Ashwin then produced an excellent delivery to castle De Kock for 31. Du Plessis (52*) and Senuran Muthusamy (6*) were at the crease when umpires called for lunch. For India, comeback man Umesh Yadav took his wicket tally to three (3/27) while Mohammed Shami went to lunch with figures of 2/28.

Ashwin bowls an excellent over as the first session on Day 3 comes to an end. South Africa end at 136/6 with Du Plessis unbeaten on 52.

40.2 overs: Dropped! Virat Kohli at short mid-wicket drops Senuran Muthusamy off Ravindra Jadeja. Full-length dive from Kohli and he gets there, but fails to hold on to the ball. Muthusamy gets lucky on that occasion. SA 135/6

37.6 overs: OUT! Ashwin castles Quinton de Kock with a beauty. An excellent delivery to get rid of the left-hander. Takes the top of the off stump. First wicket for Ashwin. South Africa six down as De Kock falls just before lunch. SA 128/6

The Proteas skipper in counterattack mode now. He is dealing in boundaries at the moment. Collects two fours off Jadeja’s over. Gets to his 21st Test fifty with a boundary on the final ball of the over. 8 fours and a six in Du Plessis innings so far. SA 124/5

50-run partnership also comes up between Faf du Plessis (31*) and Quinton de Kock (25*). Square drive from De Kock off Ravindra Jadeja and 100 comes up for South Africa in 34.1 overs.

33.5 overs: FOUR! Through the on side for four. On the pads from Mohammed Shami and Faf du Plessis hits it through mid-wicket region to collect a boundary. SA 99/5

31.6 overs: FOUR! Quinton de Kock finds the fence off Mohammed Shami. Over-pitched from Shami and De Kock drives the ball beautifully through covers to collect his fifth boundary. Change in bowling for India as Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack. SA 88/5

End of 31st over: Big LBW appeal from Ashwin on the final ball of the over against Faf du Plessis. Umpire rules not not and after a thorough discussion and consultation from wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha, Virat Kohli decides not to go for the review. 17.3 overs: OUT! And the tight clustered slip cordon is straight into action. A sharp catch from Virat Kohli at fourth slip and night watchman Anrich Nortje departs early on Day 3. Shami gets his second wicket. More trouble for South Africa. SA 41/4

End of 17th over: A tidy first over from Umesh Yadav. Just a single from it. Mohammed Shami will continue. Four slips and a gully for him now.

On the second day, as captain Virat Kohli hit a career-best 254 not out at the MCA Stadium, the South Africans found themselves standing in front of a mountain of runs as India declared at 601/5.

At stumps, the visitors’ scorecard wore a struggling look at 36/3 as the hosts look to take a series-winning lead in the three-Test rubber.

Umesh Yadav, who replaced Hanuma Vihari in the eleven for this Test, then dismissed the Proteas’ openers Dean Elgar (6) and Aiden Markaram (0), while Mohammed Shami sent Temba Bavuma (8) back to the hut.

Theunis de Bruyn (23*) was in the middle with night-watchman Anrish Nortje (2*) when stumps were drawn at the end of second day’s play.
