Sanju Samson hits 212*, highest List-A score in Indian domestic cricket – Times of India

KOCHI: Kerala’s Sanju Samson registered the highest List-A score in Indian domestic cricket, smashing 212 not out off 129 balls against Goa in a Vijay Hazare Trophy Group A game at Alur in Bengaluru on Saturday. The wicketkeeper-batsman converted his first List-A century into a double ton and, in the process, overhauled the record of Karn Kaushal of Uttarakhand who hit 202 against Sikkim last season.
Sanju hit 21 fours and 10 sixes in his knock and helped Kerala put up 377/3 in after they decided to bat first. Sanju and former skipper Sachin Baby put together 338 for the third wicket, which incidentally is the highest partnership for any wicket in List-A, including ODIs, for Indian cricket. The duo surpassed the 331 in the name of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid for India for the second wicket against New Zealand Hyderabad in 1999.

Sanju’s 212 is the highest List-A score by a wicketkeeper in the world. He pushed Pakistan’s Abid Ali to the second spot. Ali had scored 209 for Islamabad against Peshawar in Pakistan’s domestic one-day tournament in 2018.

The Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman is the sixth Indian to notch up a double century after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma (All in ODIs), Shikhar Dhawan and Karn Kaushal. Sanju reached 200 in 125 balls, the fastest double ton among the six. He is also the only Indian to achieve the feat batting at No. 3. All the other five were openers. While Sanju’s 200 is the fastest among Indians, it is the second-fastest overall in List-A. Australia’s Travis Head holds the record (120 balls) which he achieved against Western Australia playing for South Australia in 2015.

Sanju has been in great form of late. He had threatened some big scores but could not carry on to make a big one till this innings. His scores in the Vijay Hazare Trophy before this game were 16, 67, 36, 48, and 16. He scored a 91 off 48 balls for India ‘A’ against South Africa ‘A’ at his hometown in Thiruvananthapuram last month.
